|---|---|
| 55.8 million | People age 65+ in the 2020 Census, representing 16.8% of the U.S. population. |
| 19.5 years | Life expectancy at age 65 in 2023, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. |
Why this matters
Adults over 50 are not one audience with one set of needs. They are workers, founders, volunteers, listeners, musicians, caregivers, friends and neighbors. The data points to a large and growing part of the country whose lives are shaped by connection, purpose and local community.
Sources and methodology
Population figures come from the AARP Longevity Economy Outlook and the U.S. Census Bureau. Life-expectancy data comes from the National Center for Health Statistics.
